The 27th St West Drug Free Communities Youth Council (DFC) is an encouraging reflection of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote, “The world belongs to the energetic.”  He was a 19th century writer and leader of transcendentalism, a belief in which we can simply break down as, individuals relying on intuition and through personal experiences and observations.

Unlike teachings offering cultural, religious, social and political influences, it is a different way to draw intellectual responses to difficult questions. These same thoughts are familiar or applicable in communities which feel a common sense of responsibility towards issues.

We operate out of the 53208 zip code of the City of Milwaukee; primarily out of two neighborhood agencies, Neighborhood House and Hmong American Friendship Association.  We anticipate growth throughout neighborhood activities as well as with other agencies locally and city-wide.  Our outreach span is unlimited and we welcome new members and support at any level.

Currently we are comprised of several multi-cultural members pre-teen to teenagers, who come together during summer programming, as well as in after-school programming at both locations to engage in alternative activities.  These activities are aimed to reduce and move away from the influences of alcohol and drug abuse; such, is a culture which is already embraced and praised heavily not only by media, but throughout the social culture of our city, from the placement of several alcoholic establishments to taverns and advertisements within neighborhoods.  The same idea exists for substance abuse, which goes hand in hand often with alcohol consumption.

The availability of trying something one-step up from the last, to heighten moods, displace responsibility for difficult or stressful situations is a community reality. These experiments have often been the cause of downward spirals of tragedy and violence within homes, and neighborhoods.  We aim to listen to one another, understand, plan together, and apply positive leadership opportunities to support our community, and to receive support for what we believe is important to us.

Please take the time to learn more about us, who we are as individuals, who supports us, what we have done, and encourage yourself to actively –if not in our community, then in your own, to utilize the energy, intellect, and potential of youth in various ways, which allow them to identify, analyze, plan for, and apply their ideas toward resolution, as well as be free and creative about their modes.
